Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) has launched Sri Lanka's first - ever artificial football turf at Beddagana Sports Complex.
The event took place on Saturday, 10 March 2018 in the presence of Minister of Sports Dayasiri Jayasekara along with FFSL President Anura de Silva.
This artificial turf was funded by FIFA and shall be used by the Sri Lanka National team to prepare for international games. Complying with international standards, this turf provides an opportunity to train National teams in any weather conditions.
"We are delighted to open this sports infrastructure for Football for the first time in the country and we will support continuously to develop football in Sri Lanka" said the Minister of Sports.
Speaking at the occasion President of FFSL Anura de Silva said "We thank FIFA, AFC and Ministry of Sports for keeping their confidence in football and supporting the game in every aspect.
Natural turf fields will turn muddy in moderate to heavy rain. Artificial turf field, however, rain or shine, players will leave a perfect field behind every time. The all-weather properties of these fields make them particularly ideal for wetter areas or playing even during rainy seasons of the year."
Beddegana artificial football pitch and the training centre can provide residential training facilities for 40 players and 15 officials at any given time.
There is also a Cafeteria, Auditorium and Gymnasium as part of the Complex.Meanwhile, a friendly match was played between Ministry of Sports officials led by Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara and FFSL team led by Anura de Silva. Ministry of Sports defeated FFSL 6-1.
