May 14, Colombo: The Government has decided to grant kerosene subsidies to low income households that do not have electricity and owners of fishing boats using kerosene with effect from midnight on May 10.
The Ministry of Petroleum Resources Development says that a program is being prepared to directly issue the disbursements to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries. Relevant information will be obtained from the Samurdhi Development Department and the Department of Fisheries.
According to the information obtained the Ministry of Petroleum Resources Development hopes to promptly pay the subsidies with the arrears from the day price of kerosene has been revised.
The price of kerosene liter was Rs. 44 before and the price increased by Rs. 57 to Rs 101 effective from midnight May 10.
The government says that the kerosene oil subsidy given for the poor is misused by certain individuals. It has been reported recently that private bus owners were using kerosene oil instead of diesel.
