Sri Lanka Muslims begins Ramadan Fast on Friday-18 May, while majority of the Muslims world over begins their fast on Thursday – 17th May.
As -the lunar moon for Ramadan has not been sighted in Sri Lanka, and the first day of the fasting month will be observed on Friday. The Colombo Grand Mosque said that fasting month observed by Muslims in Sri Lanka, in view of Ramadan will commence from May 18.
Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad.
Ramadan falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and holds a great significance for the Muslim community across the globe. During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims observe fast marking it as a gesture to revere the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief.
This annual observance is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The month lasts for about 29–30 days (usually a month) based on the visual sighting of the crescent moon, according to numerous biographical accounts compiled in the hadiths.
In the meantime, the Shahi Imam from Saudi Arabia has officially announced that the Islamic holy month of Ramadan will start from May 17, 2018.
The crescent for the holy month of Ramadan is sighted and the month of fasting will commence from Thursday, May 17 in Pakistan. Chairman Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, Mufti Muneebur Rehman made the announcement after heading session of central committee held in Islamabad.
According to media reports, Muslims in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Oman, Kuwait, Iraq, Iran, Palestine, the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan are also likely to begin the holy month of Ramadan form Thursday.
